THE DEETS: It’s sure to be a sweet night when you are promised a ‘pink tie’ party and the smell of cherry in the air. The cause for such an event? The Kickoff to the Cherry Blossom Festival. In 1912, Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo gifted 3,000 cherry trees to Washington, DC. 101 years later (with 100 of the original trees left), the Cherry Blossom Festival is the largest Japanese cultural festival in the country and this year it was welcomed with a Pink Tie cocktail party at the Renaissance Downtown Hotel hosted by chef Lorena Garcia. Guests including Washington Redskins wide-receiver Pierre Garcon, wearing the color of the evening, were able to toast to the pink life with the smell of Escada’s Cherry in the Air. The cherry infused theme didn’t stop there; it was evident in the decor, cocktails and the food. More than a taste of D.C. was on display with more than 30 restaurants and chefs offering their delectable bites. Special geisha performances—a nod to the the Japanese influence of the festival—took place before the silent auction ended, concluding with guests hitting the dance floor to the sounds of DJ Heather Femia. Here’s to 100 more years of Cherry trees!
